Pheast Featured as One of Nature Biotechnology’s Top Academic Spinouts for 2023

CD24 has emerged as a distinct macrophage checkpoint that enables tumors to evade innate immune clearance, and is often highly overexpressed in cancers such as ovarian and breast cancer. Pheast Therapeutics is advancing antibody therapeutics designed to block this “don’t eat me” signal, reactivating macrophage-mediated phagocytosis while also promoting downstream T cell activation to engage both innate and adaptive immunity. Cofounders Amira Barkal and Roy Maute talk with Nature about the academic work in Irving Weissman’s Stanford lab that inspired Pheast’s platform strategy of systematically identifying and developing macrophage checkpoint targets to build a scalable pipeline of next-generation immuno-oncology therapies.
